WETLAND RESTORATION UNDERWAY IN BUSHENYI
By Hunter radio reporter
BUSHENYI - UGANDA The Bushenyi District Environment office, in partnership with the Office of the President, has launched a crackdown on wetland encroachment in the district. A team led by Igambirine Hillary, ARDC Bushenyi, visited Kihirigitwa wetland in Nshumi-Kyamuhunga, which was restored four months ago, and found it regenerating with people cutting grass for mulching and birds inhabiting the area.
However, the team found widespread degradation and encroachment activities in Rushoroza wetland, Kizinda town council, including farming and livestock rearing. The Office of the President has instructed the Bushenyi District Environment Office to give encroachers a two-week ultimatum to vacate the wetland or face forceful eviction.
Rushoroza wetland is critical, feeding Warugo River, which supplies water to five sub-counties and Bushenyi-Ishaka municipality. The team also inspected Nyamirembe Wetland, which feeds Kitagata water treatment plant.
