Five people have died in Ikashozi Division, Sheema District, after reportedly eating meat from a dead cow suspected to have been infected with anthrax.

SHEEMA - UGANDA: Authorities in Sheema District are investigating a suspected anthrax outbreak in Ikashozi Division after five people died.
According to a letter dated 14th July 2026 from the Resident District Commissioner of Sheema, Jane Muhindo, the victims died after consuming meat from carcasses of animals.
The RDC says the person who slaughtered the animal died on the spot, and another woman who prepared it also died. Nine other people have been hospitalized.
The letter, addressed to the RDC of Kasese District, warns that some people in Kasese consume meat locally known as _'sanga meat'_. Samples have been submitted to the government laboratory for testing in both humans and animals.
The RDC is advising residents to temporarily halt consumption of _sanga meat_ as they await results, saying _“prevention is better than cure.”_
Health and veterinary teams have been copied and are expected to sensitize the public.
