Quarantine Declared in Kyabugimbi Over Anthrax Outbreak

BUSHENYI - UGANDA : Kyabugimbi Town Council and Ruhumuro Sub County are under quarantine due to a confirmed anthrax outbreak, according to Dr. Naturinda Roberts, the district veterinary officer. The quarantine restricts the movement of animals and their products to prevent further spread of the disease.


The anthrax outbreak is believed to have originated from neighboring Sheema district.

One person has died, and nine others have been hospitalized due to direct contact with infected animals.No movement of animals and their products is allowed to contain the disease.

 Anthrax is a zoonotic disease, posing a significant risk to human health, especially for those in direct contact with infected animals .



Anthrax is a bacterial disease common among ruminant animals like cattle, goats, and sheep. It can cause flu-like symptoms in humans and is capable of causing death if left untreated. Effective preparedness and response to anthrax outbreaks are crucial to mitigate its impact on human and animal health.



In related Sembabule District  Confirmed cases of anthrax have been reported, resulting in over 25 cow deaths and 2 human fatalities. The district is considering enforcing livestock movement quarantine to contain the disease 



The district veterinary office, in collaboration with health authorities, will continue to monitor the situation and implement measures to contain the outbreak. Residents are urged to cooperate with the quarantine measures and seek medical attention if they suspect exposure to anthrax.
