Rugyeyo LC3 Chairperson-Elect Dies Weeks After Re-election.

Elias Jameson Kanyonza, the LC3 Chairperson-elect for Rugyeyo Sub-county in Kanungu District, has died just weeks after securing another term in office. Kanyonza passed away on Tuesday at Namirembe Hospital in Kampala after a short illness. Family members said he had been admitted for several days, although the exact cause of death was not disclosed.

His death has shocked residents of Rugyeyo Sub-county, many of whom described him as a dedicated and committed leader. Frugence Karanda, a resident, said the news came as a shock and noted that Kanyonza will be remembered for his strong support for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

He said Kanyonza served for many years as the sub-county publicity secretary and played a key role in popularizing the party in the area. Joseph Akankwasa, another resident, said Kanyonza will be missed for his diligence and commitment to service, noting that he leaves behind a legacy of integrity and non-discriminatory leadership.

Elias Komwami said Kanyonza had served as LC3 chairperson for about 20 years after replacing the late Lauben Rwamatungu and was overwhelmingly re-elected in the 2026 general elections due to his strong leadership record.

Kanungu District LC5 Chairperson Sam Arineitwe Kajojo said the district council has resolved to hold a special sitting on Thursday this week to honor the late Kanyonza for his dedicated service. Further burial arrangements are yet to be announced.
