KAMPALA – The Government has taken decisive action against YY Coaches, suspending their operations for 15 days starting from 6:00 p.m. this evening. The suspension follows a series of road accidents involving the bus company, including a fatal incident on Katusiro Road that claimed lives.

State Minister of Transport, Fred Byamukama, addressed the press, citing the reasons for the suspension. “In a period of two weeks, they have reported two accidents, one of which was fatal,” he said. “The cause of these accidents is attributed to speeding, as seen in the case of Katoosi, where the driver was overspeeding and lost control of the bus.”

The Minister also revealed that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the bus was carrying prohibited flammable liquids, suspected to be waragi. “We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, and there’s information that this bus had some liquids on board which are suspected to be waragi,” he said. “Putting waragi on buses is prohibited, and we will get to the bottom of this.”

During the 15-day suspension, YY Coaches is expected to take all their drivers for inspection to ensure they are in good working condition. The company will also need to provide appointment letters for their drivers and schedules for accreditation.

“We expect them to bring all their drivers’ passes for inspection, appointment letters, and schedules,” the Minister said. “These are mandatory requirements that must be met before we consider lifting the suspension.”

The Minister emphasized that the suspension is a measure to ensure road safety and hold bus companies accountable for their actions. “The owners of these bus companies don’t seem to mind when their drivers cause accidents,” he said.

“They simply replace them with new drivers without taking responsibility for the accidents. This is unacceptable, and we must take action to prevent such incidents in the future.”
