The Deputy President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for the Western Region, Jolly Jackline Tukamushaba, appeared in court on Thursday and was remanded to prison until February 24, 2026, following charges of inciting violence.

Tukamushaba, who had been reported missing by party members, was confirmed to have been in custody after her court appearance, resolving earlier uncertainty about her whereabouts.

According to the charge sheet, she is accused of contravening Section 79(1) of the Penal Code Act, Cap 128, by allegedly inciting members of the public to commit acts of violence between December 2025 and January 2026.

The prosecution alleges that she encouraged such actions at various locations in Western Uganda, including Rukiga, Kabale, and Rukungiri districts.

The particulars of the offence state that Tukamushaba allegedly urged individuals to attack supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) based on their political affiliation.

The presiding magistrate ordered that she remain in custody while investigations continue.

Her arrest and remand come amid heightened political tensions in parts of Uganda, with opposition leaders calling for respect for political freedoms and due process.

Security agencies, however, have stressed that the law will be enforced against individuals accused of promoting violence.
