Anthrax Outbreak in Bushenyi District One Dead, Nine Suspected Cases

BUSHENYI - UGANDA: A deadly anthrax outbreak has hit Bushenyi district, claiming one life and leaving nine others suspected of infection. The district's Resident District Commissioner, Emmy Ngabirano, confirmed the development and urged the community to refrain from consuming dead cows to prevent further spread of the disease.



The outbreak is concentrated in Kyabugimbi subcounty, with neighboring districts Buhweju and Sheema . According to District Veterinary Officer Mr. Natukunda Roberts, four animals have died in Kyabugimbi.



The suspected cases, reported on March 24, 2025, presented symptoms including:  Fever, - Headache ,  Malaise,  Nausea ,  Abdominal pain,  Vomiting , Swelling of arms, Skin lesions


Two patients are currently admitted at Kyabugimbi Health Center IV. The Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Arua confirmed the anthrax outbreak.



To combat the outbreak, local authorities are working to educate the community on anthrax prevention and control measures. This includes:

- Safe disposal of animal carcasses

- Avoiding contact with infected animals or contaminated materials

- Vaccination of animals against anthrax authorities speaks . 



Anthrax is a zoonotic disease that can affect both humans and animals, with cutaneous anthrax being the most common form. If left untreated, it can have a fatality rate of up to 20%. The district's health department is taking steps to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.


In December 2023, a suspected case of anthrax was reported in Amudat District, where 102 suspected cases were identified, and seven were confirmed  The Uganda Public Health  Program and the Ministry of Health intervened to support the district in investigating the outbreak .
