Former Minister Mary Karooro Okurut Passes Away at 71

UGANDA.  Renowned Ugandan educator, author, and politician Mary Karooro Okurut has died at the age of 71. Born on December 8, 1954, in Bushenyi District, Okurut was a celebrated figure in Ugandan politics and literature.


Okurut attended Bweranyangi Primary School and Bweranyangi Girls' Senior Secondary School before joining Trinity College Nabbingo for her high school education. She later graduated from Makerere University with a Bachelor of Arts in Literature (1977), a Master of Arts in Literature (1981), and a Diploma in Education (1982).


Okurut served in various ministerial positions, including:

- *Minister of General Duties*: Office of the Prime Minister (2016-2021)

- *Minister of National Security* (2015-2016)

- *Minister of Gender and Social Issues* (2012-2015)

- *Member of Parliament*: Bushenyi District Women's Constituency


Okurut was a prolific writer and founder of the Uganda Women Writers Association (FEMRITE). Her notable literary works include "The Invisible Weevil" and "The Official Wife". She was also known for her contributions to Ugandan literature and her mentorship of young writers.


State Minister for Primary Health Care, Margaret Muhanga, paid tribute to Okurut, describing her as a mentor, literature teacher, and "bosom buddy". Hon. Mawanda Maranga Micheal, MP Igara East and close friend, confirmed Okurut's passing in a WhatsApp group, stating that burial arrangements would be announced later
