BUSHENYI UGANDA: The Bushenyi District Council has paid a glowing tribute to the late Hon. Mary Karooro Okurut, former Minister and Member of Parliament for Bushenyi district, by resolving to rename the Bushenyi Main Stadium to Mary Karooro Stadium. This recognition celebrates her invaluable contributions to the district and the Ankole region, particularly in promoting youth talent through sports.

The motion, moved by Kyamuhunga Town Council councillor and district secretary for education, health, and community-based services, Edward Mpabwa, highlighted Karooro’s unwavering support for youth talent development through sports, particularly during the Ankole Football Tournament.

LC5 Chairman, Jaffari Bassajabalaba, thanked the late Hon. Karoro for her tireless efforts in developing the district and requested the government to complete the projects she initiated. Denis Kanyankole, LC5 councilor representing Ruhumuro Sub-county, echoed similar sentiments, urging the government to finish what Karoro had started.

Minister for Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, described Karoro as a role model for all in greater Bushenyi, praising her dedication to public service. "We shall remember her for her passion for development and her love for the people of Bushenyi," Magyezi said.

After the council meeting, a delegation led by government officials and church leaders received the body of the late Hon. Karoro Okurut at Nyakabirizi playground from Kampala. The body was later taken to St. Peters Cathedral Bwerenyangi WAD, where it was received by Rt. Rev. Bishop Johnson Twinomujuni, Bishop of West Ankole Diocese.

In his sermon, Bishop Twinomujuni thanked God for Karoro's life and legacy, highlighting her contributions to the district and the country at large. The local citizens have pleaded with the government to follow up on the projects Karoro initiated and complete what she was unable to finish

The body of the late Hon. Karoro Okurut will be laid to rest tomorrow with state funeral rites at her home in Bwatogo. The district is mourning the loss of a leader who left an indelible mark on the lives of the people she served.
