Tragic Incident Claims Couple's Lives in Buhweju

By Hunter radio reporter

BUHWEJU.  The police in Buhweju District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a couple, Gumisiriza Deus, 40, and Nyamwiza Evalyne, who were killed when two large stones rolled down a hill and crashed into their house in Kogorogoro Village on Saturday night.

According to SP. Tayebwa Apollo, Regional Police Public Relations Officer, the stones were dislodged by earth tremors and had been made unstable by digging activities around them. "Preliminary findings indicate that the stones had previously been interfered with, making them loose and susceptible to rolling downhill during the earth tremors," he said.

The couple's six children, who were in the house at the time,  escaped unhurt. Postmortem examinations revealed that the female victim died from fatal chest injuries, while the male victim suffered severe abdominal injuries and a compound fracture.

"The bodies were handed over to the relatives for burial as investigations continue," SP. Tayebwa said, cautioning residents living in hilly areas to avoid destabilising rocks and to be vigilant during earth tremors and heavy rains.
