POLICE NAME VICTIMS OF BUSHENYI GOLD MINE TRAGEDY

BUSHENYI   -  UGANDA  The Greater Bushenyi Police Region, in liaison with the Ankole Regional Mineral Protection Police Unit, has released the names of five people who died in an illegal gold mining accident in Kayanga village, Kyamuhunga sub-county, Bushenyi district, according to SP Tayebwa Apollo, Regional Police Spokesperson.


The incident occurred on February 24, 2026, when the soil collapsed, killing the five instantly. The deceased are:

1. Namanya Saul, 35

2. Mujurizi Julius, 45

3. Akanyamba Stuart Kokyenga, 16

4. Nuwagaba Anthony, 20

5. Twijukye Sansio, 32


The police, with other agencies, retrieved the bodies and handed them over for postmortem examination. Investigations are ongoing, and preliminary findings indicate the victims were using rudimentary tools and had no mining license.


The police appeal to the public to comply with mining rules and regulations to avoid such incidents.
