An Iranian warship has sunk off Sri Lanka following an apparent submarine attack that has left more than 100 sailors missing and 78 injured.

A major search and rescue operation is under way in the Indian Ocean today after IRIS Dena was hit by an 'explosion' around 25 miles south of the the island.

Sri Lankan politicians have refused to confirm what caused the warship to sink but a military source told Reuters that the ship was attacked by a submarine. The source did not say whose submarine was used in the attack.

Meanwhile Israel has vowed to assassinate Iran's next supreme leader as the country decides who will succeed Ayatollah Khamenei whose funeral has been postponed today.

Overnight Iranian drones attacked the US consulate in Dubai, causing it to catch fire, while a missile also struck America's largest military base in Qatar.

Meanwhile Saudi Arabia has confirmed its Ras Tanura oil refinery has been targeted in another attempted drone strike.

Both Sri Lanka's navy and air force said they would not release footage of the rescue because it involved the military of another state.

Police stepped up security outside the Galle hospital as the wounded Iranians were brought there by the local navy.

It comes days after The US military said it had struck Iran’s largest naval warship following the launch of Trump’s ‘Operation Epic Fury.’

The sunken Iranian warship was returning from a military exercise in India when it went down off Sri Lanka, a source has told the AFP News agency.

It is now being reported nearly150 people are missing and several dead after IRIS Dena sank earlier today.

Sri Lanka's navy rescued 32 sailors from the frigate but hopes were fading for 148 other sailors, the island's Foreign minister and defence officials said.

The source was unclear of the reported explosion involving the frigate, which was travelling after attending a military exercise in India's eastern port of Viskhapatnam.

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath told parliament that 32 rescued Iranians were rushed to the main hospital in the island's south while two navy craft and a plane were deployed to search for survivours.

The frigate issued a distress call at dawn on Wednesday and within less than an hour a rescue vessel reached the area about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of the southern port of Galle, the minister said.
