A 47-year-old man has died after falling from the roof of Rugyeyo Tea Factory in Rugyeyo Sub-county, Kanungu District. The deceased, identified as Lawrence Niwabine, a resident of Kichwamba Village in Rugyeyo Parish, was reportedly cleaning the factory roof on Monday, March 30, 2026, at around 7:45 a.m., when the incident occurred.
Niwabine is said to have accidentally stepped on an iron sheet that gave way after the nails supporting it came loose, causing him to fall into the factory. A worker at the factory, who spoke on condition of anonymity, says Niwabine hit his head on metal structures during the fall, sustaining a severe head injury that led to his instant death.
The Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, saying officers responded to the scene and documented the case. Maate says, “Police visited the scene and conveyed the body to Rugyeyo Health Centre IV for postmortem examination.” He adds that “the body was later handed over to the family for burial.”
He has urged factory management to prioritize worker safety, noting that employers should ensure the provision of appropriate protective gear and strict adherence to safety measures to prevent similar incidents. Rugyeyo Tea Factory is operated by the Kinkizi Development Company.
