Property worth millions of shillings has been destroyed after a fire gutted structures at Care Nursery and Primary School in Ntarabana Parish, Buhara Sub-county, Kabale District. The incident occurred on Monday night, leaving several school properties reduced to ashes.
According to the school director, Innocent Mbweinenamukama, the fire broke out unexpectedly, prompting immediate efforts by residents to contain it. “I was surprised by the flames, and together with locals, we tried to put it out using water and soil, but our efforts were unsuccessful,” he said.
He added that the police fire brigade was later alerted and responded to the scene. However, by the time the fire was contained, several items had already been destroyed. Mbweinenamukama said property, including school structures, books, clothing, and mattresses worth about Shs30 million, was lost in the blaze.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident, noting that no lives were lost despite the extensive damage. Maate said preliminary investigations indicate that the fire could have been caused by an electrical short circuit. Police have since launched further inquiries into the incident
