KAMPALA – The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries has announced a compulsory nationwide livestock vaccination campaign to eliminate foot and mouth disease.
The exercise will run from July to August 2026, with a second phase scheduled for January to February 2027.
Under the campaign, farmers will pay UGX 8,000 per dose for cattle and pigs. Goats and sheep will be vaccinated at UGX 4,000 per dose.
Government will cover all additional costs, including vaccine administration and transport for veterinary personnel.
The nationwide drive targets 45.5 million animals: 15.5 million cattle, 17.4 million goats, 4.4 million sheep, and 7.1 million pigs.
State Minister for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Bright Rwamirama said compliance is mandatory.
“Only vaccinated animals will be granted market access and allowed to participate in livestock trade activities in Uganda,” Rwamirama said.
He called on all livestock farmers to support the initiative, noting that foot and mouth disease remains one of the greatest threats to the development of Uganda’s livestock industry.
