CDF Muhoozi denies threatening Besigye, seeks dismissal of rights case!
By Hunter FM radio Reporter.
The Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has asked the High Court to dismiss what he describes as speculative and hearsay allegations by jailed opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye that he threatened to hang him.
In an affidavit sworn on his behalf by Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Atwine, the head of the UPDF's Special Investigations Bureau, General Muhoozi says Dr. Besigye's application contains falsehoods and does not accurately represent the events leading to his arrest and detention on treason charges.
Lieutenant Colonel Atwine states that the UPDF received intelligence reports indicating that Dr. Besigye and his co-accused, Hajji Obeid Lutale, were involved in activities considered detrimental to Uganda's national security.
He says investigations were launched on suspicion of treason.
According to the affidavit, the alleged activities included coordinating with individuals within and outside Uganda to mobilize, recruit, train, and acquire arms with the intention of overthrowing the government.
The affidavit is in response to a human rights enforcement application filed by Dr. Besigye and Hajji Lutale, in which they accuse General Muhoozi, two UPDF officers, and the Attorney General of violating their constitutional rights through what they describe as an illegal arrest in Nairobi, unlawful detention, and public threats made on social media.
General Muhoozi, the Attorney General, and the two UPDF officers have therefore asked the High Court to dismiss the application and allow the criminal trial to proceed.
The case is scheduled for hearing before Justice Emmanuel Baguma on June 30th.
